HAVE YOU BEEN FIRED? HERE’S HOW TO EXPLAIN IT AT INTERVIEW

“You’re fired!” These are words that no employee wants to hear. Unlike being “laid off” from a job, being fired places the fault on the employee. People can be terminated for a variety of reasons, including poor job performance, breaching company policies and procedures, or serious misconduct, such as bullying, harassment, intoxication and theft. Where then, do you go from here? What do you say to a potential employer when you’re interviewing for a new role? Chances are, you haven’t provided a reason for leaving your job on your resume or cover letter – and that’s OK. But most savvy recruiters will ask why you’re moving on, so be prepared to tell them.

Have you been fired? Here’s how to explain it at interview.

  • Think about how you will respond in advance, so you know what to say

No-one wants to be on the back foot on the day. By reflecting on the situation and practising your answer, you will be ready with the right words.

  • Aim for a clear and honest response

It might be tempting to brush over the truth or, alternatively, go into detail about the situation. Don’t! Keeping it simple and straightforward is crucial.

  • Try to avoid negative language or blaming your previous employer

These are red flags for a recruiter. Showing you bear a grudge or displaying anger and bitterness won’t help you secure a new role.

  • Acknowledge what happened and admit you were in the wrong

Everyone is human and makes mistakes. And it takes humility and courage to own your mistakes and speak out about them. By taking this approach, you’re demonstrating integrity and accountability to your recruiter.

  • Tell your recruiter what you have done since

Perhaps you have undertaken additional training or gone alcohol-free after being fired. It’s a good idea to take positive action after a termination. You’re not only showing your recruiter that you own your mistakes, you’re doing your utmost to ensure they don’t happen again.

Being fired from a job doesn’t mean you’ll never work again. Own your past mistakes, learn from them and move forward with courage and confidence. A new opportunity awaits!
