IS A HYBRID ROLE RIGHT FOR YOU?
There’s been a lot of talk about employers mandating staff to return to the office full-time, but the reality is that employees can often request flexibility. Around 45% of Aussie workers have hybrid working arrangements in place, according to McCrindle.
It seems these roles, with their mix of office-based work and remote work, are here to stay. But is a hybrid role right for you? What are the pros and cons of this way of working?
PROS
- Better work-life balance
If you feel that work is taking up too much of your time, it might be worth thinking about a hybrid role. It’ll give you more say on where and when you work. And could help you find the balance you need.
- Reduced commuting times and costs
With hybrid work, you might work part-time from home or closer to home. This can save you significant amounts of time in the car or on public transport. And save you money, too!
- Increased productivity
When you have a say in where and when you work, chances are you’ll be more productive. You might have less distractions and better focus when you work from home, for example. Or be able to work different working hours that suit you better.
- Better mental health
With more job control and more flexibility in your working day, you’re likely to feel less stressed.
- Higher level of job satisfaction
All of these things can help you feel more satisfied about the work you are doing and who you are doing it for.
CONS
- Communication challenges
It can be hard when so much of your communication is virtual. You may miss those spontaneous water-cooler chats and informal and formal office updates.
- Collaboration concerns
You’ll likely need to develop new ways of working with others in your team for those days that you’re not on-site.
- Lack of belonging
When you’re working a couple of days here and a few days there, you might lose that sense of shared purpose and company culture.
- Blurred boundaries
When does your working day actually end? You might feel that you’re constantly on call when you’re working from home. And that can lead to increased stress and even burnout.
- Tech issues
Tech fails and patchy Internet are a thing. And they can be tricky to deal with when you’re out on your own.
It’s worth weighing up the pros and cons of a hybrid role to work out if it’s the right option for you.
