How to Prepare for Your First Interview in Years
If you haven’t had an interview for several years, the thought of sitting across from an interviewer can feel daunting.
Perhaps you’ve been with the same employer for a long time, taken time away from work, or simply haven’t needed to interview in years. Whatever the reason, remember: interview skills are skills you can refresh. With a little preparation, you can walk into your next interview feeling confident and ready.
- Refresh your resume
Before your interview, read through your resume carefully. Be prepared to talk about your previous roles, responsibilities and achievements.
Think beyond your job title. Consider the skills you’ve developed along the way; communication, leadership, problem-solving, customer service, organisation and teamwork can all be valuable.
- Research the company
Take some time to understand the organisation you’re interviewing with.
Look at their website, services, values and recent activities. Think about why the company and role appeal to you.
Being able to explain why you want the position shows genuine interest and preparation.
- Prepare for the common questions
You don’t need to memorise your answers, but it’s helpful to think about how you’d respond to questions such as:
- “Tell me about yourself.”
- “Why are you interested in this role?”
- “What are your strengths?”
- “What is an area you’re working to improve?”
- “Tell me about a challenge you’ve faced at work.”
- “Why are you looking to make a change?”
Think of real examples from your career that demonstrate your skills and experience.
- Don’t worry if things have changed
Interview styles and recruitment processes can change over time. You may encounter video interviews, behavioural questions or different approaches to assessing candidates.
Don’t be afraid to ask your recruiter or the employer what to expect.
If you’re working with a recruitment consultant, they can often provide valuable insight into the interview format and what the employer is looking for.
- Prepare your own questions
An interview isn’t just about the employer deciding whether you’re right for the role. It’s also your opportunity to decide whether the role is right for you.
Consider asking:
- What does a typical day look like?
- What are the priorities for this position?
- How would you describe the team culture?
- What does success look like in the first six months?
- What opportunities are there for development?
- Remember what you bring to the table
If you’ve spent many years in the workforce, you have something extremely valuable: Experience.
Don’t underestimate the knowledge, perspective, reliability and skills you’ve developed throughout your career.
If you’ve been out of the workforce, remember that taking time away doesn’t erase your previous experience. Focus on what you can bring to the role today.
Finally, give yourself some credit
Your first interview in years might feel unfamiliar, but you don’t need to be perfect.
Be prepared, be honest and be yourself. Take your time answering questions and don’t be afraid to pause and think.
The goal isn’t to remember how to interview. It’s to show an employer what you can bring to their team.
